NBSC PARTICIPATES IN PHILSA-LED PINAS WORKSHOP ON SPACE DATA APPLICATIONS
Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC) joined “The PINAS Workshop in Bukidnon,” a two-day training led by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) in partnership with Central Mindanao University (CMU), its College of Engineering, and the Geomatics Center for Research and Extension in Mindanao (GeoMin) from November 24 to 25, 2025. Representing NBSC were Mr. Ericko Jay M. Alciso and Mr. Ramer N. Verdejo.
Representatives from local government units (LGUs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and regional government agencies came together for the two-day event. On the first day, a student symposium was held. Participants heard talks on the objectives of the PINAS Project, technical presentations on the use of space data, and practical workshops on mapping and using the ODK app for on-the-ground data collection.
To assist participants in using space technology for local operations and planning, PhilSA also provided a set of readily usable maps and data. The bundle includes Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, ground motion data, air quality data, and maps of past flood episodes. The purpose of these tools is to assist local communities with disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), environmental monitoring, and land-use planning.
Participants identified essential issues in their communities, such as environmental management concerns, conservation priorities, and the need for ongoing capacity-building programs, during the participatory mapping and knowledge needs assessment session. To effectively promote regional development, these findings will guide future PINAS Project initiatives.
For NBSC, the training provided an opportunity to conduct innovative research and to build strategic partnerships in PhilSA in the future, using the PINAS Project to deliver impactful community service and transformative development in Bukidnon and Region X.
