NBSC Conducts Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) to Strengthen Campus Sustainability Efforts
In a significant step towards enhancing its solid waste management initiatives, Northern Bukidnon State College successfully conducted a 6-Day Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) on campus from March 17-22, 2025, after undergoing a 2-day comprehensive Training and Workshop on February 20-21, 2025. The study aimed to assess the composition and volume of waste generated within the institution to develop data-driven strategies for waste reduction, recycling, and sustainability. Spearheaded by the Solid Waste Management Core Team, in collaboration with the General Services Unit, department coordinators, utility personnel, faculty, and student organizations, the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) was conducted through systematic waste collection, segregation, and analysis. The study provided valuable insights into waste composition, identifying key areas for intervention, such as reducing single-use plastics, enhancing composting programs, and optimizing waste disposal strategies. The findings from the study will serve as the foundation for crafting the institution’s Ecological Solid Waste Management Plan (ESWMP). It will also support ongoing sustainability campaigns, including awareness drives, infrastructure improvements, and policy recommendations aligned with national and local environmental regulations. Students actively participated in the study, gaining hands-on experience in waste auditing and environmental advocacy. “Being part of WACS was an eye-opener. It made me more conscious of the waste I generate daily and the importance of proper segregation and recycling,” shared James Stehen Gabitano, Officer of the Student Alliance for a Greener Earth (SAGE) and a participant in the initiative. The administration encourages all students, faculty, and staff to continue supporting sustainability by practicing responsible waste disposal and embracing eco-friendly habits. NBSC remains committed to integrating sustainability into its campus operations and academic programs, ensuring a lasting positive environmental impact.
