NBSC-ITE’S RESEARCH EXTENSION PROJECT SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES AT MALUKO CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC) proudly celebrated the successful culmination of its Sustainable Literacy and Inclusivity Program (SULIP) Reading Literacy Project, an official Institute for Teacher Education (ITE) Research Extension initiative, on December 3, 2025, at Maluko Central Elementary School. The culmination marked the completion of literacy sessions delivered from November 12 to 26, 2025, and featured a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) with parents and teachers to assess program outcomes and gather insights for future literacy interventions.
A central highlight of the culmination was the formal turnover of responsibilities to Hon. Kagawad Ismael A. Payag, Education Committee Chair of Barangay Maluko, symbolizing a strengthened partnership between NBSC and the local community in sustaining literacy efforts for young learners.
Throughout the program, NBSC faculty, volunteers, teachers, and parents collaboratively supported the 28 identified struggling readers, many of whom demonstrated noticeable improvements in fluency, confidence, and reading consistency. Parents shared that learners were more motivated to practice at home, while teachers affirmed significant progress during guided activities.
A notable feature of the project was its remote monitoring mechanism, which ensured continuous learning even without face-to-face sessions. Each learner’s tablet contained the contact numbers of NBSC volunteers and volunteer teachers. When the reading application was opened at home, the system automatically sent an SMS alert to the volunteers. This allowed NBSC personnel to track reading engagement in real time, while parents supervised their children’s reading practice at home. The combination of digital tools and coordinated monitoring strengthened learning continuity and accountability.
The project was implemented through the dedication of faculty from the Institute for Teacher Education, namely Noraisah U. Radaza, MA, ITE Research Extension Coordinator; Rolyn Z. Baquial, MA; Jessa Escarpe-Cabintoy, MA; Marites L. Salce, MA; Ramer N. Verdejo, MS; Dulce Amor S. Loquias, PhD; Helen B. Ajon, MA; Joseph Joshua A. Palapar, MA; Asimah G. Abdulsalam, MA; and Dave G. Laga, MA. Their efforts were complemented by faculty from the Department of General Education Curriculum (DGEC): Edilyn A. Culajara, PhD; Christine S. Tabaco, MA; and Karen V. Añover. The team also worked closely with volunteers from Barangay Maluko, Alternative Learning System (ALS) volunteers, and partners from Mission ALBA, represented by Sir Ryan V. Uy and Ms. Louela Galon-Boquiron.
NBSC extends its heartfelt appreciation to its administration, led by College President Christie Jean Villanueva-Ganiera, EdD, CESE, for the continued encouragement and institutional support provided to extension programs. The College also acknowledges the leadership of Dr. Jovelyn G. Delosa, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mr. Benzar Glen S. Grepon, Supervising Administrative Officer; and Mr. Alven L. Gomez, MSEST, Director of the Community Extension Services Division (CESD).
NBSC likewise expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Christine C. Royo, Program Head of the Institute for Teacher Education, and Ms. Niemfa Love W. Maginsay, Program Head of the Department of General Education Curriculum, for their unwavering guidance and support throughout the implementation of SULIP.
As the project concludes, NBSC reaffirms its commitment to creating impactful community engagements that uplift learners and empower families. The SULIP Reading Literacy Project stands as a meaningful testament to the College’s mission of strengthening literacy, fostering collaboration, and cultivating opportunities for sustained educational growth.
