NBSC Welcomes 71-Year-Old Enrollee: A Living Testament that Learning Knows No Age
In a heartwarming milestone that made school history, Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC) officially welcomed 71-year-old Romeo Aguirre as an enrolled student under the Institute of Teacher Education, taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in English, on June 16, 2025.
This milestone marks a first in NBSC’s history โ the oldest enrollee ever recorded, and a powerful symbol of the institutionโs belief in inclusive, lifelong, and transformative education.
A former 2nd Lieutenant of the 52nd Brigade, Mr. Aguirre retired from military service in 2006 and now resides with his wife in Tankulan, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. He has four children, all of whom now have their own families. But his desire to learn remains undiminished even after decades of service and family life.
His motivation to enroll was sparked by curiosity after hearing about NBSCโs entrance examinations from his grandchildren. On May 2, 2025, he took the exam alongside them, showing that the love for learning runs deep in the family and transcends age.
โI am most inclined with English,โ he shared. โIf I ever enrolled here, I think I will be more effective in English.โ
While he dreams of finishing college, Mr. Aguirre humbly said that career advancement is no longer the goal at his age. For him, the opportunity to gain knowledge, be productive, and pursue a lifelong dream is already an outstanding achievement.
He also expressed his appreciation for NBSCโs seamless enrollment process:
โVery systematic and complete equipment,โ he noted.
