35 NBSC Faculty Researchers Strengthen IP Law Awareness through Seminar-Workshop
Thirty-five faculty researchers from Northern Bukidnon State College (NBSC) completed a two-day Seminar-Workshop on Research and Documentation for Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSPs), Customary Laws, and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), held on May 5–6, 2025, at Dream Golftel, San Miguel, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.
The Research Ethics Office (REO), led by Dr. Anna Marie D. Genita, organized the activity. It aimed to enhance faculty researchers’ understanding of the legal frameworks and ethical protocols involved in conducting research involving Indigenous Peoples (IPs).
Day one of the seminar focused on IKSPs and Customary Laws, equipping participants with foundational knowledge of indigenous traditions and governance systems. On the second day, Atty. Dexter B. Precioso, Regional Legal Officer IV, was the resource speaker. He addressed legal questions and institutional concerns regarding the conduct of research with IP communities.
Atty. Precioso also highlighted the importance of understanding the diverse decision-making processes within indigenous communities, emphasizing that these variations significantly impact how researchers approach negotiation and the implementation of FPIC.
The seminar-workshop reaffirmed NBSC’s commitment to ethical research and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that its academic initiatives uphold the rights and dignity of Indigenous Peoples
